Distant Friend, I Love You!

Distant Friend, I Love You!

I posted this elsewhere when it was first released, but reposting here to be able to refer to it at some point in the future as at some point I wanna get deeper into how it shows off the various writing/myth making/world building I constructed around the record last year.

Techwise: I made it in Unity (mostly) and it was all captured in real-time. I say mostly Unity, because it’s really more of a software framework that I am endlessly developing, dismantling and rebuilding. An assemblage of programs that communicate with each other via OSC. In the iteration used to make this video, Ableton Live is running the audio and a whole range of layered MIDI tracks. Those MIDI tracks are playing custom-built MaxForLive instruments that turn MIDI notes into more specific string/float/int instructions and then send them via OSC into Unity, where they can trigger any manner of things. In effect, Unity is operating as a kind of visual sampler.
